ALL POSITIONS HAVE BEEN FILLED FOR SUMMER 2012

Hut staff at Maine Huts & Trails work together with a small team to deliver backcountry hospitality and create memorable outdoor experiences. Interaction with hut staff is at the heart of the visitor experience.

The winter season runs from mid-December to April. Priority will be given to qualified candidates able to work the full season. On-site accommodation and food are provided for all positions. The standard schedule is 10 days on / 4 days off.

Hut Master

The hut master oversees daily operations at the hut to assure high standards of customer service. In addition to performing all aspects of the hut crew position, the hut master is responsible for leading and motivating staff and volunteers, creating and implementing daily schedules, performing daily inspections to ensure that all public areas are clean, well maintained, and safe, finding solutions for guest complaints, managing inventories of supplies and merchandise, overseeing routine maintenance of the hut, and overseeing operation of green energy systems. Applicants should be personable, effective problem-solvers capable of maintaining high standards in an isolated environment. This position requires strong leadership skills and supervisory experience in a related work environment.

Hut Cook

The hut cook oversees kitchen operations, with overall responsibility for the quality of food service at the hut. This includes catering breakfast and dinner for up to 48 guests, and preparing and serving soups, sandwiches, breads, baked goods, and lunch specials. Responsibilities include supervision and training of staff, safety and sanitation practices, managing inventory, controlling food waste, and maintaining kitchen equipment. This position requires experience in all aspects of kitchen operations.  Supervisory experience is preferred. The hut cook will be required to obtain a Certified Food Protection Manager certificate prior to commencement of employment.

Hut Crew

Hut crew are responsible for providing a welcoming, friendly, and clean environment for overnight guests and day visitors. Hut crew undertake a variety of responsibilities on a rotational basis, including front desk, food preparation, housekeeping and custodial duties, and assisting with operation and periodic maintenance of green energy systems. Successful applicants will have a proven commitment to customer service, the ability to work as part of a team, and the ability to maintain high standards in an isolated setting. Food service, hospitality, or related experience is preferred.

Naturalist Guide

The Naturalist Guide is responsible for the delivery of educational and recreational programs and activities for youth, families, and adults. The Naturalist Guide will act as an interpretive and informational resource, providing high-quality customer service and helping to connect guests and visitors with their natural environment. Previous experience in environmental education and interpretive program development and delivery is required.

Grand Falls Hut Masters

The Hut Masters at our most remote hut have the same responsibilities as Hut Masters at the other huts, but at Grand Falls Hut there are no staff other than the two hut masters. The maximum number of guests at Grand Falls Hut is 32. Successful applicants will be capable of maintaining high standards and working independently in an isolated environment. Backcountry Caretaker

Maine Huts & Trails requires volunteers to serve as backcountry hut caretakers during the self-service season.Caretakers live on site in staff quarters at the huts for two to twelve weeks. This is a unique opportunity to live rent-free and off-the-grid, with a recreational playground at your fingertips. Kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, hiking, and camping are all possible from the huts. Room and board are provided. Caretakers welcome and provide information to visitors, and must be attentive to the cleanliness and maintenance of the hut. The caretaker will ideally be an outgoing person who enjoys sustainable living and outdoor recreation and appreciates the Maine outdoors.
