Maine Huts & Trails provides year-round opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels to enjoy the mountains, rivers, lakes and woods of western Maine. We’re delighted to help our guests enjoy the unique and numerous activities of the Maine backcountry.
During the spring, summer and fall seasons there are options for day hikes, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, birding, fishing, hunting and paddle sports. Flagstaff Lake Hut and Grand Falls Hut are both situated on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and Flagstaff has canoes and kayaks for the use of members at no charge. White water enthusiasts enjoy Grand Fall’s location on the Dead River. The Dead River is also one of Maine’s finest trout and salmon rivers, offering high quality angling opportunities for hut guests. We even offer two fly fishing schools at Grand Falls Hut in July (details). Trout fisherman will relish the native brook trout fishing in Poplar Stream, by the Poplar Stream Falls Hut. Mountain bikers will enjoy miles of trails around Sugarloaf and Poplar Stream Falls Hut.
During the winter months, our guests’ backcountry experience revolves around cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Each hut has a supply of snow shoes for use by members at no charge.
The 45-mile-long Maine Hut Trail is groomed for both classic and skate cross country skiing. There are also numerous summer hiking trails that make excellent snowshoe walks around the hut woods during the winter. The most popular activity during the winter is a multi-day hut-to-hut excursion on either cross country skis or snowshoes. This is an adventure not to be missed!
