5 Traits of Successful Solo Travelers

Solo travel, (not singles travel- that’s a different subject altogether) is kind of having a moment. You can’t scroll too far on any Instagram feed without seeing at least a few shots of someone ‘Eat, Pray, Loving’ their way through a fabulous adventure. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many people are choosing to hit the trails alone- independence, self-awareness, and an adventurous spirit are arguably some of the most admired virtues of our time. What used to seem only the domain of complicated introverts and troubled renegades is now becoming a rite of passage for all!

Some of the most interesting people in the world are solo travelers, and at Maine Huts & Trails, we meet them all the time. Here’s what we’ve learned:

1. They’re Outgoing:

Solo travelers are definitely comfortable with alone time, but they’re also experts at impromptu conversations. One reason so many people love to travel by themselves, is the time and space they have to make meaningful connections- with locals, fellow travelers, and new places.

2. They’re Flexible:

When you travel alone, the adventure is all yours. You can be as scheduled or carefree as you like, and change your plans anytime- no compromises, no discussions. Want to rest by a waterfall for the entire afternoon, or kayak out to an island for lunch? Just do it. The freedom to make your trip exactly what you want it to be is a game changer.

3. They’re Safe:

When you strike out on your own, you need to be extra prepared. When you’re outdoors, this means all the precautions you’d normally take and then some. Being sure to have multiple emergency contacts, and a game plan for every scenario are crucial for your peace of mind and safety. There’s a world of information on the subject, but here’s a good place to start. If you’re headed to the backcountry, don’t rely on cell phone service- bring a satellite phone like the DeLorme InReach

4. They’re Capable:

Yeah, you get to make all the decisions. That also means you get to solve all the problems. Solo travelers have to be ready for anything- changing a tire, a flight, or an itinerary is a one person job. Your best bet? Go somewhere that feels easy and comfortable, where you speak the language.

5. They’re Relaxed:

Alone time- especially in nature- is one of the best ways to completely unwind. Spending a few hours on a solo hike is a great way to live in the moment, focus on breathing, and feel gratitude- all proven ways to boost your mood and reduce stress.

When you embark on a solo adventure, you’ll come back a little wiser, more confident, and more relaxed than ever. Not quite ready to go it completely alone? Check out a Guided Trip where you can get away from it all without being completely by yourself.
