If you’ve ever had the chance to take a hike in Maine, whether its just a walk with your
dog through an ocean side trail or a challenging hike up Katahdin with a group of friends, you know that Maine has so much to offer. For those of you who haven’t had the luxury of taking a hike in Maine, here are a few reasons to make the effort.
1. Beauty. Maine is beautiful! Taking a hike in Maine allows you to explore this beautiful state. We have everything from waterfall hikes to beach strolls to pine forests and mountains with ocean views.
2. Diversity. There’s something for everyone. Whether you are looking for a challenging hike or a family friendly exploration, you will find a trail that meets your needs in Maine.
Looking for a cool pine forest to meander through and explore wildlife or just want to walk along the Maine Coast and enjoy the scenery? Look no further than one of the many State Parks Maine has to offer.
Looking for a challenge? Maine offers difficult above tree line trails for the more experienced hiker. For instance:
Katahdin: Just 13 feet short of a mile high and rises by 2000 feet per 2 miles of trail. It’s the Northern terminus of the Appalachian trail.
3. Wildlife. The fact that Maine is 90% forest means you will run into wildlife of all sorts! The most of any state, with 17.7 million acres of forest that house moose, deer, bears (beware they look cute and cuddly, they are not), birds, fish and more.
4. Huts. Maine Huts and Trails have trail to trail huts making your hiking experience convenient. You can immerse yourself in the trails and still rest in a warm room, hot meal and warm shower before you head out again.
5. Keep in Shape. Who wants to do a workout that feels like a workout? Instead hiking is a great way to be outdoors and get distracted by all you have to take in while getting a whole body workout. Hiking not only strengthens your lower body, it also strengthens your core, it’s great cardio and aerobic exercise and it helps keep you fit and healthy.
It’s time for you to hit the trails, enjoy the huts and experience the best Maine has to offer. If you have any great experiences with hiking in Maine we’d love for you to share them in the comments section.
