Summer & Fall Full Service Season is Over – Welcome to Caretaker Season!

Here is the latest news about the huts crews as of the conclusion of the summer & fall full service season. Content provided by Poplar Hut Master Ellen McDevitt:

I thought I’d take a break from cleaning the hut to write a quick blog post.  The crew members are all a little sad to wrap up the summer season, but excited about their winter plans. I thought I’d share a bit about what each of us is planning for the next few months.

Julie, Poplar Hut Master, is off to master the slopes!  She’ll be making snow at Sugarloaf until she starts as a Sugarloaf Ski Patroller in mid-December.  Jakob is going to spend some time in New York City, buy some winter gear, and then return to the huts for the winter 2011-12 season.  Ellen will be interning at a magazine in Vermont until she returns for the winter 2011-12 season.

Chris, Flagstaff Hut Master, is planning to spend the next few weeks visiting family.  He’s not yet sure what the post-Thanksgiving future holds.  Zach, Flagstaff’s Assistant Hut Master, is planning a big cross-country move.  He’s headed to Montana!  Harper is spending the next few months working with World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) in Downeast Maine.  Following that, she will spend the next academic term studying abroad.  Natalie actually finished her season at the hut in September in time to go back to school; she reports that she loves her drumming class.  Katherine, who joined our crew this fall, will be working as a Ski Patroller in Vermont this winter.

Neil and Georgia, Grand Falls Hut Masters Extraordinaire, aren’t sure what the next big adventure is, but I’m sure we’ll all be jealous.

Those of us staying with Maine Huts for the winter are excited to see what the snowy season is like, and looking forward to seeing you out on the trails!

Now it is caretaker season! Each hut is staffed by a volunteer caretaker and remain open for your use. During caretaker season, guests are expected to provide their own food, cook for themselves and clean up afterwards. The caretaker will keep the facility properly heated and functioning. They will greet you upon arrival, orient you to the hut facilities and show you to your room. MH&T members stay overnight during this time for just $30 per night and non-members for $35 per night. Reservations are still required. Call 877.634.8824 to reserve.
