Maine’s Backcountry Hospitality at Its Best

Maine Huts & Trails: Flagstaff Hut at night

Imagine skiing or hiking for several miles, enjoying western Maine’s beautiful landscape and arriving at a well-appointed, highly-efficient backcountry lodge, where you can enjoy a hot shower, a cozy room for you and your group, and delicious home-cooked meals.  Since 2008, Maine Huts & Trails has been making this dream a reality.

From 2008 to 2010, we opened three of our planned twelve backcountry huts.  Poplar Stream Falls Hut has been welcoming guests since 2008, Flagstaff Lake Hut saw its first visitors in 2009, and the opening of Grand Falls Hut in 2010 completed our current trio of huts. Each of these huts has a main lodge and separate cabins for sleeping. Over the next decade, with your help, we’ll be building several more huts for people of ages and abilities to enjoy year-round.

The huts are attractive, energy efficient structures designed to blend harmoniously into their natural surroundings. Each hut is off-the grid and features state-of-the-art utility systems that generate and store their own power through a combination of alternative energy sources. Each facility will accommodate up to forty-four guests and four staff members in a variety of room sizes, providing visitors with sleeping accommodations, a soft mattress and a pillow, hot showers, toilets, and healthy, homemade meals. These amenities at remote locations along the trails help to manage human impact and provide backcountry access for those seeking a “comfort camping” experience.
