This list of activities has been created for you (our visitors) to maximize your enjoyment during your stay with us. Summer is a fantastic time of year to visit Maine Huts & Trails and this list highlights the best of what you can do during your stay. Our Trip Planning experts are available to help customize a trip and itinerary for you and your group. Additionally, here is a description about each of the levels of difficulty:
Easy: all ages, no gear or equipment required, one sport activity, no guide required. If you can get to the huts, you can do these activities.
Moderate: no more challenging than getting in to the huts, but could be longer trips of up to 4 hours. Participants should be fit and active, but no advanced skills or guide required.
Challenging: a strong level of fitness and outdoor competency required. Guides or support service available upon request.
Most Challenging: the highest level of fitness and stamina required. These trips are no joke. Guides or support service available upon request for additional fee.
Hike to Spencer Rips and Alder Pond Stream along the Dead River. Enjoy a leisurely stroll down from the hut to the river and head east (left) on the trail along the river. After appr. ¾ mile, you’ll reach a bridge crossing Alder Pond Stream. Return to the hut be heading back along the same route but then stay to the right on the Maine Hut Trail to Grand Falls.
Time: 1-2 hours

- Hike and Raft – Sign up for the hike and raft package offered by Northern Outdoors. Are you ready for serious adventure? This is a one-of-a-kind Maine woods experience offered exclusively by Northern Outdoors and MH&T. Enjoy a day of hiking to reach the hut, a relaxing night at the hut and then a day of rafting along the Class II/III whitewater Dead River.

Fishing
The Dead River (above and below Grand Falls) and Spencer Stream are both recognized as world-class trout fisheries. Hire a guide or go it alone. Grand Falls Hut is far-and-away the most proximal lodging option for fishing the Grand Falls area. Need some instruction or want a guide? Take part in one of the weekend-long fly-fishing schools.
