“Our students had an amazing experience on their trip. Not only was it a smooth process for us to learn about the opportunity but also to make the reservation.  The trip was a huge success for the ten first-year students and the two leaders.  They also found the views spectacular."

-Colby College Asst. Dean of Students

You heard about Maine Huts & Trails, now what is it?

Your journey to the huts, and from one to the next, will become a family pastime that spans generations and promotes healthy lifestyle.  Over the next 12 years, more huts will spring up along the 180-mile path through the western mountains and lakes of Maine.  Trailheads will sprout along the route, and link area services such as shuttles and gear rentals. The experience emphasizes “go fast go light” or “go light, go comfortably” where our full service offerings take the weight right out of your pack.

Make a Reservation

We currently operate two backcountry huts:  Poplar Stream Falls and Flagstaff Lake Hut.  These are not small rustic structures, but rather state-of-the-art lodges which can sleep up to 42 guests.   The distance between the two is 11.3 miles, and each has a nearby trailhead, approx. 2 miles for easy access into the hut system.  You can spend all your time at one lodge, or travel from one to the other and back on skis for example, or if you don’t want to backtrack, be creative and shuttle a car to each trailhead ahead of time – about an hour and half extra time.  If you prefer, you can call the local shuttle services, their rates are available on our web site area resources page.

This adventure can be done year round, hiking, biking, paddling, skiing and snowshoeing and is suitable for all ages and ability levels.  Our in-house reservations staff is ready to assist you in planning your trip, and helping to guide you for the best possible experience.

The trail system will continue to expand before your very own eyes.  Become a part of the evolution of Maine’s newest natural treasure.
