Huts Imagine skiing or hiking for several miles, enjoying western Maine's beautiful landscape and arriving at a well-appointed, highly-efficient backcountry hut, where you can enjoy a hot shower, a private room for your group and delicious home-cooked meals. Well, imagine no longer. In February, 2008, we opened our first of 12 planned backcountry huts - each of which has a main lodge and separate cabins for sleeping, in scenic Carrabassett Valley. Over the next decade, with your help, we'll be building 11 more huts for people of ages and abilities to enjoy, year round.
The huts are attractive and energy efficient structures designed to blend harmoniously into their natural surroundings. Each hut is, or will be, "off-the grid" and features state-of-the-art utility systems that generate and store their own power through a combination of hydro-, solar- and wind power. Each facility will accommodate up to 42 guests plus 4 staff in a variety of room sizes. The huts will each provide sleeping accommodations, with a soft mattress and a pillow on each bunk, hot showers, toilets and healthy, homemade meals. These amenities at remote locations along the trails help to manage human impact and provide accessibility for those seeking a 'comfort camping' experience.
