Trail Crew

Maine Huts & Trails is hiring experienced, full-time seasonal trail crew workers for the 2016 field season. The trail crew will be responsible for building and maintaining multi-use backcountry trails that connect the Carrabassett Valley to the West Forks. This year’s diverse line of projects range from establishing new trail to building structures to improve existing trail, and will be accomplished with the help of partnering organizations and volunteer efforts.
The trail crew will be based near Kingfield, Maine and should have reliable transportation given the organization’s rural location. There are currently 80 miles of developed multi-use trails; 50 of which are double-track, groomed winter ski trails, and 30 miles of single-track side trails. Much of the trail system is remotely located, so crew workers should be prepared to pack in to remote project sites. Projects often involve camping or working out of one of the system's four off-grid huts, making backcountry experience and etiquette a requirement.

The trail crew consists of one trail crew leader and two trail crew members. The schedule is typically four 10-hour workdays per week, but may vary depending on the area’s event schedule. The trail crew should expect and be prepared to work alongside New England’s fly season and in all types of weather, barring hazardous conditions decided by the trail crew leader or trails manager.

The right candidates will have at least one full season of backcountry trail construction and maintenance experience. They will each possess initiative, independence, be team-oriented, and have strong navigational skills. The right candidates will have experience operating motorized equipment, demonstrate maintenance and safe use of hand tools, be attentive to detail, and be able to balance quality with efficiency.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • One or more seasons working on backcountry trail crews
  • Proven experience working for prolonged periods in inclement weather
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 or more lbs repeatedly and perform repetitive motions like digging, hammering, shoveling, and raking
  • Ability to navigate rugged terrain
  • Proficiency in backcountry trail navigation
  • Community First Aid and CPR certification
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a fast paced environment and quickly reorient to new tasks

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related
  • Carpentry experience working with both native timber and PT lumber
  • Rock work including retaining structures, stepping stones, staircases
  • Building and maintaining trail drainage structures
  • Recording of GPS tracks and waypoints using a handheld device
  • Chainsaw certification
  • Wilderness First Aid

Position Details:

  • Compensation: Salary is $11-12.50/hour based on experience
  • Work Schedule: 10 hour workday, 4 days on/3 days off (8 days on/6 days off for remote project locations) June 1 to September 30 or later
  • Work Location: Maine Huts & Trails is based out of Kingfield, ME with trail access points from the town of Carrabassett Valley to the West Forks. The trail crew will meet at a designated location every morning and travel together to and from the work site.
  • Application Process: Please email resume, cover letter, and three references describing how your work experience fits into this position to ssteele@mainehuts.org. Write your subject line in the format: “first name last name, trail crew application.”
